Greek Word Study
Make Ashamed
The Greek word is:
Kataischyno - a verb translated in the KJV as "make ashamed", "confound" or "dishonor"; "disappoint" being a common translation in the NAS
Kataischyno is used in twelve new testament verses usually in the context of describing the outcome of placing our trust in words; either false or true. Its meaning is loosely along the lines of a few common expressions such as: 1) being 'taken out of the loop' (of truth) or, 2) 'left holding a bag' (of lies)' or, 3) being 'left out in the cold' (of falshoods).
For example 1Peter 2:6 tells us that whosoever believes in Jesus will no doubt become part of God's house. In other words, they will be directly in the middle of God's work of Salvation on earth and not left holding an empty bag of false hope as will those who put their faith elsewhere.
Romans 10:8-11 gives us another look of how believers know we are 'in the flow of truth' in terms of God's work of salvation. That is, those who receive the words of the gospel---thereby receiving salvation---will offer up those same words out of their mouth into the ears of others so that they might also receive salvation. Those who engage the gospel of Christ will not be disappointed.
Elsewhere, in 1Cor.1:27 the idea is that the wisdom of God circumvents the worldly wise.
Another use of kataishyno is in 1Cor.11:4 where a man wearing a head covering kataishynos his Head because the man has not assumed his appointed place in the flow of God's order. And in 1Cor.11:5 we see a woman usurping the place of a man thereby taking him 'out of the flow' of the proper flow of truth.
Finally, in 1Cor.11:22, we see an object lesson where some saints were being denied food at the Sunday feasts, leaving them hungry and taken out of the flow the flow of food.
