Stumbling Over the Cornerstone
Jesus suffered and died for the sins of the world almost 2,000 years ago. He was buried but arose from the grave three days later, like a rock from the ground. Now in heaven, He offers Himself as a spiritual Rock to fallen man; a Cornerstone set by God upon which rests an eternal dwelling place God is building for Himself. Rev. 21:2-3
How can we sinners get in on this heavenly construction? Those who turn to Jesus by putting their trust in Him for the forgiveness of sins escape eternal death and receive eternal life as living stones set on God's Cornerstone.
Tragically, most will reject the gospel of the free gift of salvation in Christ. God describes this rejection as stumbling over His Cornerstone---falling headlong, past the only escape, down the broad road of destruction and toward the destination that awaits all who are disobedient to the word of the gospel.
What then is this word that must be obeyed to escape eternal death?
Therefore they said to Him, “What shall we do, so that we may work the works of God?” Jesus answered and said to them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He has sent.” John 6:28-29
Two Destinations Have Been Prepared and Set by God |
"Not everyone who says to Me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father who
is in heaven will enter [What is the will of the Father? to believe on Him who the Father has sent from heaven]... Therefore everyone who hears these words of Mine
and acts on them, [Jesus offers the words of the gospel that must then be received by faith] may be compared to a wise man who built his house on
the rock [the Rock is Jesus]. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the
winds blew and slammed against that house; and yet it did not fall, for
it had been founded on the rock." [echoes the account of Noah's ark where the ark is a type, or symbol, of Christ who withstood the flood waters of judgment for the sins of the world; the ones who heed the word of God dwell safely inside the ark] Matt. 7:21,
